Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez insists his position in the first team has not increased in importance despite becoming a World Cup winner with Spain during the summer.

The prodigious playmaker has reportedly been a target of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past, and he continued his development by being a member of Vicente del Bosque’s triumphant La Roja in South Africa.

However, El Mundo Deportivo reports that despite his success, the player believes he remains just as key a member of San Mames squad as any of his colleagues, commenting, “I have the same responsibility this season as when I came to Bilbao a few years ago. The fact is that I am playing with Athletic Bilbao, and this is the same whether or not you win the World Cup.

“The whole team is important. When one player is considered more important than the others, that will mean the end of the team.”

Martinez reckons Los Leones looking to build on their league performance last season, by looking at the European positions rather than relegation.

He claimed, “We very much hope to have an enjoyable season. Last year we took a step forward, to stop thinking about relegation, and we look forward to further progress.”

Bilbao kick off the new season with a tricky trip to La Liga new boys Hercules.
