Espanyol Keeper Carlos Kameni May Miss La Liga Kick-Off Due To Knee Injury
The shot-stopper has sustained an injury as the season's start approaches...
By Paul Macdonald
Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni could be set to miss the start of the Primera Division campaign after sustaining a knee injury in the club’s pre-season clash with Tarragona.
The Cameroon shot-stopper suffered a sprain to the ligament in his right knee, landing awkwardly after jumping to catch a cross, and had to be replaced after just 10 minutes of the match.
Medical scans have confirmed the extent of the injury, but it remains unclear whether the 26-year-old will have recovered in time to take his place in goal versus Getafe in the league opener next Sunday (August 29).
Blanc i Blau coach Mauricio Pochettino replaced Kameni with their second choice keeper, Argentine Cristian Alvarez, who joined the club in 2008 from Rosario Central but has made just nine appearances.
The news will come as a further blow to Pochettino, who this week saw defender Felipe Mattioni sidelined for at least six months with a serious knee injury, hampering his preparations for the new campaign.
