Valencia coach Unai Emery believes the season objective for his team should be to remain a ‘landmark’ team in Spain, and is positive about their chances in the upcoming campaign.

Los Che begin the 2010-11 Liga with a trip to Malaga, and continued their pre-season preparations with a comfortable victory over Fiorentina on Wednesday evening.

When asked what he believes the club can achieve in the season ahead, Emery told journalists that Valencia should look to maintain their status as one of Spain’s biggest clubs.

He stated: “We aspire to remain large, to remain a landmark in Valencia, Spain, in Europe and the world.

“We should look neither up nor down, or sideways, but look inward to be happy with ourselves, so that happiness is projected out. The struggle of Valencia will be against 19 teams in the league and what comes in the Champions League and the cup.”

Emery also passed comment on the club’s current financial situation, and added that it was imperative that concentration remained on youth development and producing more talent of the likes of the departed David Silva.

The coach said: “The economic situation is one in which the football world is forced to bet on youth. It is our responsibility to know when a kid is ready to take the leap [into the first team].”
