Wednesday's Spanish Friendlies Round-Up: Valencia Cruise Past Fiorentina
Los Che's new strike force impress at the Mestalla...
By Paul Madden
Valencia 2 - 0 Fiorentina
Valencia's new strike partnership of Roberto Soldado and Aritz Aduriz showed why the club invested in them this summer as both netted second half goals in a straightforward win over their Serie A visitors at the Mestalla.
In almost identical attacking moves, winger Vicente charged down the left flank virtually unchecked before floating in inch perfect crosses for each forward to finish. First Soldado rose practically unchallenged, 12 yards out, to power a magnificent header home on 71 minutes.
Not to be outdone substitute Aduriz replicated Soldado's attempt meeting Vicente's second cross at the edge of the six yard box to nod home via the upright four minutes later to complete a comfortable win for los Che.
Atletico Madrid 0 - 1 Sporting Gijon
Quique Flores' Atletico Madrid followed up their 3-2 friendly defeat to Mallorca with another defeat, this time at home to Manuel Preciado's Sporting at the Vicente Calderon.
Argentine striker Gaston Sangoy bagged the only goal of game nine minutes from time to give the Asturian side a win in what is a dress rehearsal of their opening Primera Liga fixture on August 29.
Real Sociedad 1 - 1 Real Union
Newly promoted Basque outfit Real Sociedad had to come from a goal behind against Segunda B side Real Union. The visitors lead just before the break thanks to a goal from Gorka Brit but Sociedad restored parity just after the restart with Imanol Agirretxe levelling but despite some concerted pressure couldn't find a winner.
Osasuna 0 - 1 Real Valladolid
Relegated Valladolid did enough to secure victory over their hosts at the Reyno de Navarra with veteran striker Antonio Sanchez de la Calle netting the only goal of the game six minutes from time.
Olympiacos 0 - 0 Deportivo La Coruna
Miguel Angel Lotina's men produced a typically tenacious defensive display against their Greek hosts but seem destined for a successive goal shy season as they lacked the cutting edge to trouble an Olympiacos side which is coming off the back of a 5-1 thrashing of Serie A side Roma.
Levante 1 - 0 Almeria
As the continue preparations for a fresh assault on the Primera Division Levante secured a narrow win over Andalusian side Almeria thanks to an early strike from Xisco, which proved the only goal of the game.
Logrones 0 - 3 Athletic Bilbao
Joaquin Caparros' Bilbao side strolled to a comfortable win over Segunda B outfit Logrones. Fernando Llorente guided home Andoni Iraola's cross to open the scoring shortly after the half hour mark before second half strikes from Markel Susaeta and David Lopez completed the rout for the visitors.
Granada 1 - 0 Malaga
Segunda side Granada scored early on in their contest against Primera Liga side Malaga at los Carmenes. Swiss-born striker Alexandre Geijo, on loan from Italian side Udinese, scored after 13 minutes and despite the efforts of Manuel Ferreira's side, Granada held on for a deserved victory.
