Unai Emery Considering Hewidges Maduro For Valencia Defensive Midfield Slot - Report
International display prompts reconsideration from Che coach....
By Paul Madden
Valencia coach Unai Emery is understood to be considering the possibility of using Hedwiges Maduro as a midfielder next season, according to Super Deporte.
Thus far in his three seasons at the Mestalla the 25-year-old Dutch stopper has been used predominantly in the centre of defence but has failed to hold down a regular place in Emery's first team.
His involvement in Bert van Marwijk's experimental Netherlands friendly against Ukraine last week, where Maduro excelled in a defensive midfield position, has apparently alerted Emery to consider using him in what the player himself has labelled his preferred position.
Although Emery already has David Albelda and Mehmet Topal competing for the defensive midfield berth in his 4-3-3 formation, Maduro is understood to have given his coach food for thought as to where he can make his greatest contribution for los Che.
