According to a report in El Mundo Deportivo, Spanish powerhouse Barcelona are considering making a move for highly rated midfielder Javi Martinez, currently under contract with Primera Division side Athletic Bilbao.

The Blaugranas are desperate to strengthen their midfield in the summer transfer window and they are continually being linked with a move for Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas. However, the Gunners appear to be reluctant to let go of the Spanish international.

Therefore, Barcelona have turned their attention to Javi Martinez. The young Spanish international has become an indispensable first team member at the Basque side since joining them from Osasuna and his strong performances haven't gone unnoticed elsewhere.

The 21-year-old was previously linked with Real Madrid, but Barcelona are supposedly keen to hijack the Blancos' deal for Martinez.

However, the midfielder has a €30 million release clause in his contract with Bilbao and it remains to be seen whether the Catalans are willing to meet Athletic's hefty demands.
