Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has warned his team-mates that despite their 2-0 victory in El Clasico on Saturday night, the race for the Liga title is far from over and Real Madrid will make sure it goes right down to the wire.

"Clearly it's a serious blow to our rival but it's not definitive,” the former Manchester United defender told Sport.

“There are many points to be won, but we have taken a step forward. Real Madrid will be there forever. Last year they were right behind us the whole time and put as much pressure on us as they could, this year they will do the same.”

The result put Barca three points ahead of Real at the top of La Liga, a lead that is effectively four points due to Barca’s head-to-head lead over los Blancos, but Pique insisted the race was still on.

“We have to fight right to the end if we want to take the championship,” he continued. “Three points is not much. I would not say that the league is ours. Yes it was important to win on Saturday but it's not far from definitive.”
