The Argentine stopper has spoken with Goal.com about the importance of los Blancos 3-1 triumph over the Rojiblancos...

Real Madrid stopper Ezequiel Garay has spoken exclusively with Goal.com about his side’s vital 3-1 victory over Sporting Gijon in the Primera Division on Saturday evening, and how the result piles the pressure onto rivals Barcelona to respond.

Second half goals from Rafael van der Vaart, Xabi Alonso and Gonzalo Higuain helped los Blancos to the three points, after going a goal behind, and edge clear at the top of the table with the Blaugrana travelling to Real Zaragoza this evening.

After the match, Garay commented that he was hopeful that Barcelona will struggle with the additional strain of playing catch up, and that Zaragoza could produce a similar result to the one produced by Atletico Madrid earlier in the season.

He said, “Hopefully they [Barcelona] will be opposed in Zaragoza, as they were versus Atletico Madrid and they drop points. We play before them, and we hope that they can lose points this time.”

In addition, the 23-year old insisted that the manner in which Real Madrid have managed back-to-back league victories shows that they have recovered from the pain of being eliminated from the Champions League at the hands of Lyon.

He continued, “We knew that we must raise ourselves to get over the blow of that painful defeat [versus Lyon]. Today we managed to secure an important triumph over a difficult rival.

“We spoke, and said that we are all professionals, and we know that we must try to win the only tournament which we have left, which is La Liga. We know that it is up to us to show that we can obtain it.”

Garay concluded that the two quick-fire goals in the second half, firstly from van der Vaart, and then Alonso, were pivotal in securing victory.

He stated, “We scored two goals very fast after going behind, and this has been very important for us, it has allowed us to triumph.”
