Xabi Alonso: Real Madrid Provoke A 'Love-Hate' Relationship
The midfielder sings the praises of Liverpool fans once again...
By Paul Madden
The 28-year-old central midfielder feels the polemic view of los Merengues is a curious phenomena with both extremes evident regularly.
"Real Madrid leads to a love-hate feeling that's rather curious. Wherever you travel, wherever they may be, there's always a group of one or two thousand people waiting in the terminal or outside the hotel to take pictures and applaud. You think: "F*** there's Madridistas around here!" he told Esquire magazine.
"But once you ride the bus to the opposing team's field, things change radically. We look out the window at what they [away fans] say and the gestures they make at you - it shows your not loved anymore ... This is normal, almost everyone would like to beat the big teams."
Alonso also revealed the special relationship between the team and the fans at Anfield during his time at Liverpool, with one particular night living long in his memory.
"There is a very intimate connection between the fans and players. It is a club that has suffered many tragedies and that has united them a lot. I remember a second round match of the Champions League - just the year after winning the European Cup - Benfica put up a tremendous challenge and knocked us out 0-2 at our pitch. When the referee blew the final whistle, instead of whistling the whole stadium stood up to sing in unison "You'll Never Walk Alone". I got goose bumps."
