Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart believes Valladolid defender Nivaldo should have been sent off for his tackle on Cristiano Ronaldo this past weekend.

The Brazilian stomped on 'CR9' a few minutes before the break at the Jose Zorrilla stadium on Sunday in what Van Der Vaart feels was worthy of a straight red card.

"I believe Nivaldo's tackle on Ronaldo should have resulted in a red card,” the Dutchman told a press conference.

The challenge sent Ronaldo writhing in pain however it went unseen by match officials.

“The referee didn't see it,” he continued.

“These things happen. I was very close and saw how his boot hit Cristiano's leg. I'm glad he isn't injured. He could have been seriously hurt."

Real currently sit top of the league on goal difference and the Dutch international ended by saying he had his sights firmly set on the league title.

“Before the season started I said I wanted to be important on this team and I feel I am. I want to win the league title," he concluded.
