Villarreal Defender Angel Highlights Importance Of Xerez Match
The experienced stopper says his side crave three points to put pressure on the sides above them...
By Paul Macdonald
Villarreal defender Angel has highlighted the importance of this afternoon’s clash with bottom side Xerez, insisting that a win is a priority to step up their bid for European qualification.
The Yellow Submarines, whose financial difficulties have been brought into sharp focus this week, are looking for success on the pitch despite the insistence from club officials that players may have to be sold to ensure the long-term future of the club.
Marca reports that Angel says this match is vital to stake their claim for a strong finish to the season despite the off-field uncertainty.
He said, “It is a game where we can definitely set our targets for the final stretch of the campaign. If we beat Xerez, we will be a little closer to the sides above us and this will motivate us even more for the next matches.”
Angel also noted that the visitors recorded an impressive 4-2 away win at Malaga last weekend, and so cannot be underestimated.
He added, “They may be the bottom side but they will have morale after their win against Malaga, and they will be dreaming of staying in this league, so it should be an open match.”
