There were no goals at El Molinon...

La Liga - Fixtures/Results
Sporting started with Diego Barral up front, while Bilbao went for Gaizka Toquero and Fernando Llorente in attack.
The hosts made an immediate impact when Barral latched on to Roberto Canella's long ball in the second minute, only to see his goal bound shot blocked by Fernando Amorebieta. Los Rojiblancos were dominant, and Diego Castro's ball across the box should have had someone on the end of it to finish.
It took 23 minutes for Bilbao to register their first genuine chance, when Igor Gabilondo shot wide, having been set up by Llorente. Meanwhile, Diego Castro was still causing trouble, but this time Diego Camacho failed to control his cross.
A first half that had not seen too many chances exploded into life in the last five minutes. First, Juan Pablo had to be alert to tip Javi Martinez's drive away. From the resulting corner, Llorente's header flew just wide. Then, Toquero chipped the ball over the defence for Markel Susaeta, only for him to shoot wide.
With seconds remaining in the half, Athletic had one more chance, but Javi Martinez's header flew over the bar. That proved to be the last action, as both sides went into the break searching for the opener.
Sporting had the first chance of the second half, when Alberto Botia shot wide, having been set up by Luis Moran. Then, Jose Angel tested Gorka Iraizoz with a drive, but the keeper palmed it away.
Just before the hour mark, Susaeta played a ball into the box, but Toquero's header flew wide of the mark. Then came the turning point of the match, as Toquero robbed Jose Angel in the box, and the defender was forced to concede a blatant penalty. Gabilondo stepped up to take it, but his shot was met by a smart diving save from Juan Pablo to his left.

The Sporting custodian was in fine form, and he was soon keeping Llorente's header out, after he had been set up by Gabilondo. Athletic continued to press, and Llorente's flicked on header was soon smashed over the bar by Javi Martinez.
With seconds remaining, Diego Castro thought he had snatched a late winner, but he saw his shot cleared off the line by Carlos Gurpegui. Then, with the last kick of the game, Iker Muniain, who had just come on, set Llorente up, but the striker took too long to shoot and was robbed of the ball.
That proved to be the last chance of the game, as neither side managed to break the deadlock at El Molinon.
