In comments reported by Marca, Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo warned Lyon that at the Bernabeu, Madrid rule the pitch.

"We need to show that, at the Bernabeu, we are the ones in charge," said the Portuguese. He reflected on Madrid's 3-2 win over Sevilla, saying: "The fans were great and we are grateful to them. I hope we have the same environment on Wednesday, because it will be fundamental to our success. I am confident that the stadium will be full and very positive."

"We already know Lyon, [who are] a strong team, but now we are playing at home and I am confident that we will progress. It would be a huge disappointment if we did not. We are going to go out with the mentality of winning and scoring goals. If our midfield is more offensive, even better. But that decision depends on [coach Manuel] Pellegrini."

Xabi Alonso's absence in the squad for Wednesday's match due to suspension changes the Chilean coach's plans, but Ronaldo showed confidence in the players that are available to take the place of the Spanish international. "Xabi is playing very well, but the players that play in his position will also play very well. We need to win without conceding any goals and I hope we play as we did in the second half against Sevilla.

"Eleven players play, not just me, and all of us feel pressure. We know that the Champions League is important for this club and I believe that we can turn this tie around. We are showing that we are one of the strongest teams in La Liga."

Furthermore, Ronaldo defended Kaka after the Brazilian was criticised for his play. "To me, Kaka is the most calm player in the squad. He is a great professional and I am sure that things are going to turn out well for him. He is one of the best players in the world and a fundamental player for us. Kaka wants more and, rest assured, he will pursue it."

Ronaldo also had kind words for Gonzalo Higuain and praised both Guti and Rafael van der Vaart for the way they improved the team's play against Sevilla. "Pipa [Higuain] is playing incredibly well and I hope he continues this way because, when he is playing well, it is even better for us. The team's play improved with the entrance of Guti and van der Vaart. Guti is a player of great quality, but a great team does not just consist of a starting XI, but the entire squad."

Finally, Ronaldo shrugged off comments about El Clasico. "Right now, that is not important and I don't think La Liga will be decided in that match."

Ronaldo ended his press conference by wishing Madrid president Florentino Perez, who turns 63 today, a happy birthday.
