To the consternation of Racinguistas, Canales was pictured in the famous white shirt last week during an interview with Marca having completed a six-year deal with los Merengues last month.
While Madrid are understood to have coughed up €5 million for the 19-year-old, he will spend the remainder of this campaign and next season on loan with the Cantabrian outfit.
Canales insisted that he had not meant to cause any offence to the Racing supporters and admitted that he has been overwhelmed by the furore his transfer to the Bernabeu has caused.
"I understand that some Racinguistas, that the fans are upset, so I apologise. I stress that I am here to help Racing," he told a press conference.
"It's a new world for me and it's very difficult. What's done is done. But I'll face up to it, I will not hide. I know I made a mistake and that's it, so from all this I can learn and I have learned."
