Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has claimed that the players are aware that they can perform to a higher standard, despite a 4-0 demolition of Racing Santander on Saturday evening extending their lead in the Primera Division to five points.

Goals from Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry, Rafael Marquez and Thiago condemned the Verdiblancos to defeat, and allow the Blaugrana to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat at Atletico Madrid.

However Puyol acknowledged that coach Pep Guardiola will command more from the players, and after the win said to journalists, “We are always very demanding of ourselves and ask if we are capable of more because the coach knows that we can do better.

“We were perhaps not brilliant but we were practical, but we can still give more.”

Furthermore, Puyol commented on this week's Champions League clash with Stuttgart, insisting that the club must maintain concentration in order to secure a good result.

He added, “We cannot afford to make any expensive errors, but I see that the team want to win the Champions League again and do that we must give everything.

“We will travel with confidence and motivation.”
