La Liga Team Of The Week: Round 21
Goal.com picks the best XI from Jornada 21...

Goalkeeper
Dani Aranzubia (Deportivo La Coruna) – Depor’s goal was pummelled non-stop by an inspired Malaga side, but Aranzubia was in an even more inspired mood as he kept out everything the Andalucians could throw at him. He pulled off nearly ten saves in total to ensure that the Galicians returned home from La Rosaleda with a precious point.
Defence
Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid) – It seems as though playing at the heart of defence where he is not required to roam up and down the pitch is too easy for Sergio. The versatile defender again made it look effortless as he marshalled his backline and he even drifted out to play at left-back for some parts of the game. Netted his side’s opener against Espanyol and could have had a double had it not been for Carlos Kameni.
Gaby Milito (Barcelona) – After an agonising long injury lay-off, Gaby is back and he’s back for good. Deputising for the suspended Carles Puyol on Saturday against Getafe, the Argentine looked as though he had never been away for even a day, as he commanded his area with authority and he defended as though the dismissed Gerard Pique was never needed on the pitch.
Nunes (Mallorca) – Los Barralets just about preserved their 100% home record in the league thanks to a late goal from Nunes. The 30-year-old centre-back is almost always one of the main reasons why the Islanders have won ten out of ten and conceded a measly three times at the ONO Estadi, but against Villarreal on Sunday, he showed that he can be just as much of a hero at the other end of the field.
Alvaro Dominguez (Atletico Madrid) – The 20-year-old defender is improving in leaps and bounds and despite being the youngest in what is an otherwise experienced-looking Atleti backline, Dominguez was easily the most impressive against Racing Santander. Playing as a centre-back, he coped brilliantly with the towering Sergio Canales and the explosive Momo Tchite as he defended with a cool, mature head.

Midfield
Pedro Munitis (Racing Santander) – All the attention in Cantabria may be on young Sergio Canales at the moment, but it was the veteran Munitis rolled back the years on Sunday against Atletico Madrid. The diminutive 34-year-old showed that he still has plenty of pace and trickery in his aging legs as he went on his dizzying, mazy runs down the right flank.
Ever Banega (Valencia) – The Argentine midfielder continues to state his case to Diego Maradona to take him to the World Cup in South Africa. Ever put in yet another complete performance for Los Che at the weekend against Real Valladolid, scoring a belter of an opening goal after winning the ball on his own before wrapping up his evening with a stunning assist for David Villa with a pin-point diagonal cross.
Esteban Granero (Real Madrid) – Manuel Pellegrini seem to have a knack for revitalising a player’s form after they’ve been on the bench for long periods. And Granero is no exception. After a stuttering start to the season, ‘El Pirata’ had one of his best competitive games of the campaign. He set up the opening goal for Sergio Ramos with a precise freekick delivery and continued to cause chaos in the Espanyol box with his dangerous crosses.
Juan Mata (Valencia) – The former Real Madrid canterano has had an inconsistent season so far with Los Che. But he was a livewire on Saturday against Real Valladolid as he combined telepathically with the likes of David Villa and David Silva. Ran tireless all over the attacking third to create openings for his team-mates and he was presented with a hatful of goalscoring chances himself.

Attack
Lionel Messi (Barcelona) – ‘El Mesias’ simply has no equals at present. The FIFA World Player of the Year has that uncanny ability to carve something out of nothing during tight matches and he demonstrated that twice in the 2-1 win over Getafe. He scored the opening goal by bending in a devilish shot past an impossible crowd of defenders before providing the assist for Xavi by drawing out three defenders. Player of the round.
Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao) – Athletic were staring at an embarrassing home defeat to woeful Xerez right in the face until the team’s talismanic top scorer popped up with two goals to complete a comeback from 2-1 down. His first of the evening was a trademark looping header over the goalkeeper and his second was a typical striker’s finish: ghosting in in between two defenders to stab the ball home from close range.
