Sporting Gijon Coach Manuel Preciado In Mistimed Joke About How To Stop Barcelona Star Lionel Messi
The coach makes a handgun joke days after the shooting of Salvador Cabanas...
By Paul Madden
When asked about how to stop Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi, Sporting Gijon coach Manuel Preciado has responded with an ill-timed attempt at humour stating it would take a 9mm handgun to stop the Argentine star.
In the wake of the sickening shooting of Paraguayan striker Salvador Cabanas in Mexico city last week, Preciado's timing could not be worse but the Sporting coach added that Messi simply cannot be stopped.
"How do you stop Messi? With a 9mm parabellum.... The truth is it is very difficult, if not impossible. We have to be solid at the back and help each other a lot," Preciado told a press conference.
"He's the number one. I have never seen anyone do the things that Leo does. Cristiano [Ronaldo] gets more media coverage and has another more glamorous style, but the number one is Leo. I've never seen anything like him."
Sporting face Barcelona tonight at El Molinon with the champions looking to extend their lead at the top before second place Real Madrid kick off against Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor and Preciado says his side must be prepared to fight if htey are to take anything from the game.
"Barca have very few defects, but we're going to fight until we can give no more. If not ... Why should we be here? We are not fools, but football is so great because sometimes unexpected things happen."
