Barcelona president Joan Laporta has admitted he is aware of Manchester United’s interest in coach Pep Guardiola.

The former Spanish international has enjoyed an incredible start to his coaching career, instantly making history when his Barcelona team became the first to win six competitions in a single year. Laporta is well aware that with a pedigree like that, Manchester United may just come looking for 39-year-old coach when Alex Ferguson decides to retire.

"We cannot avoid the speculation as he is the best coach in the world and many clubs will be interested," Laporta told "We know that and Manchester United are just one club who I am sure are watching his future.”

While a role at Old Trafford would be extremely difficult to turn down, Laporta remains convinced that Guardiola will be at the Camp Nou for some time to come, insisting he still has a lot of work ahead of at him at Barca.

“He has a long way to go with Barcelona,” he said. “Because of his characteristics we expect him to continue to write the pages of history of this football club.”

Finally, Laporta stressed the importance of his coach signing a new deal at the club, and insisted that contract discussions are imminent. Guardiola is said to be stalling on a new deal because he is waiting for the results of the forthcoming presidential elections and Laporta confirmed he and the Barca board respect Pep’s decision and will remain patient.

"We would like to solve this question mark over his future as soon as possible and we are convinced that he will sign but we must respect his decision to wait. We are convinced that he will sign a new contract and that he will sign soon but we cannot force him into a decision.”
