Atletico Madrid To Release Maniche In The Summer - Report

The former Chelsea and Porto midfielder will not have his contract renewed at the Vicente Calderon in the summer, according to reports...

Atletico Madrid midfielder Maniche, looking as serious as ever.
Reports in Spain suggest that Portuguese midfielder Maniche has been deemed surplus to requirements at Atletico Madrid, and will be released from his contract in the summer.

The former European-cup winning midfielder from his time with Porto has made sixteen first-team appearances in the Primera Division this season and has battled with the likes of Raul Garcia, Ever Banega and Paulo Assuncao for a start in central midfield.

However, the 31-year old's contract expires on June 30 and according to Atletico Madrid sporting director Garcia Pitarch, who was interviewed for Canal Plus prior to the late kick off this evening between Atletico and Real Mallorca, Maniche will need to 'begin looking for another club'.

Pitarch stated in the interview, "We have already spoken with him [Maniche] and his agent and they already know the decision of the club.

"Maniche will be able to freely look for another club come the end of the season."

The Portuguese international was known to have a strained relationship with departed manager Javier Aguirre, and it appears that in recent weeks that he does not see eye to eye with current coach Abel Resino either.

Resino left Maniche out of the side for the previous match, the 3-2 victory against Villarreal last Sunday, and he has also been left out of tonight's trip to Real Mallorca, a match crucial for Atletico Madrid to keep chase on Villarreal in the Champions League positions.

It is unclear whether Resino will give Maniche any more minutes between now and end of the season, but what is clear is that the player has no future at the Vicente Calderon beyond the end of the season.
