African Nations Cup: Barcelona Will Attempt To Stop Seydou Keita Playing For Mali

With January full of competitive matches, Barca will try to retain Malian international Seydou Keita

With Yaya Toure out for the whole of January with the Ivory Coast for the CAN (African Cup of Nations), Barcelona will attempt to keep Seydou Keita from his international duties with Mali as the midfielder has still not yet recovered from an injury picked up in the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Having suffered a small muscle tear, Keita could be ruled out of the preliminary matches of the CAN, pending a medical examination upon arrival in his home country. Barcelona will be keen to retain the Malian as they face a new year full of matches against difficult opponents.

The Blaugrana first take on Villarreal, a match for which coach Pep Guardiola may not have his South American players as many are cleared for vacations until the January 2 - the day of the match. The following midweek, Barca take on Sevilla at the Camp Nou in the Copa del Rey, while the return leg will be played a week later at the Sanchez Pizjuan. The next Liga matches in January involve a visit to Tenerife, a Liga match against Sevilla at the Camp Nou, a visit to Valladolid, and the first game of La Liga's return ficture list against Sporting.

It is believed that coach Pep Guardiola will call up a number of players from the youth ranks, including young Jonathan Dos Santos, to cover for the January absences, which, should Andres Iniesta be unable to recover from the injury he suffered in the Club World Cup, could mount still further.
