Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has set his sights on claiming El Pichichi by finishing the season as Primera Liga top scorer but the Argentinian striker insists that the league title is the first target.

Higuain has scored in each of the last six games he has started for Los Merengues and currently sits on eight goals, four behind current Pichichi leader David Villa. Barcelona duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11) and Lionel Messi (9) sit second and third with Higuain in fourth alongside Roberto Soldado of Getafe and Sevilla's Luis Fabiano.

"Overcoming the 22 league goals I got last year would be very important to me because of the progression that means. I am young and still have room for improvement," he said in an interview with AS before admitting that achieving the Pichichi will not be an easy task with so much quality in the league.

"I am at my best since coming to Madrid, full of confidence in what I do and what we do. The Pichichi is a dream for me and also a goal, like any striker, but only if accompanied by the league title. In Spain there is a high level of quality up front, starting with [David] Villa, who already has 12 goals."
