Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano has commented that stricken defender Pepe cannot be replaced, but has added that the club will consider a new addition in January.

The Portuguese international ruptured his knee ligament in the 3-2 win over Valencia on Saturday and faces at least six months on the sidelines as a result.

Valdano voiced his concern at the defensive cover Los Blancos have, and added that they may be willing to delve into the winter transfer market in order to aid their title bid.

Marca quotes Valdano as saying, “We appreciate that we have an opportunity to expand our staff in January in order to make the squad more comfortable, and tomorrow we will discuss this.

“We cannot rule it out but first we will have to look at the market.”

In addition he praised the defender and stated that any player brought in would not be a direct replacement for Pepe.

He commented, “Pepe is irreplaceable, there is no player like him. We have the assurance that in him we have a world class player and there is no one like him.”

Madrid's victory over Valencia on Saturday had put them five points behind Barcelona in the Primera Division table with a game in hand on their rivals.
