Real Madrid Defender Pepe Faces Six Months Out Due To Knee Injury

The defender will not play again this season...

Real Madrid’s worst fears have been realised with the news that central defender Pepe will be out of action for at least six months after sustaining a knee injury in their 3-2 victory over Valencia on Saturday evening.

The Portuguese defender was carried from the pitch in some distress just before half-time, and the initial fears that Pepe had suffered a serious injury have been confirmed today.

Goal.com reported yesterday that Pepe twisted his knee when falling awkwardly in the win over Los Che, and following tests on the knock today it's been confirmed that the defender faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

He underwent an X-ray this afternoon which confirmed the damage to his cruciate ligament, which has been ruptured in the fall.

Pepe has only recently returned to action following his ten-match ban incurred in the match against Getafe last season, and the injury not only means he will miss the remainder of the campaign but is also a major doubt for the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer.

AS comments that Jorge Valdano is considering purchasing a replacement for the defender in the January transfer window.
