Villarreal 3-2 Getafe: Nine-Man Yellow Submarine Stun Unambitious Geta
The hosts' persistence paid off...
A brave Villarreal side twice fought back from a goal down against Getafe to pick up a priceless win at El Madrigal.
Victory for the hosts was all the more surprising given that Ruben Cani was sent off early in the second half shortly before Geta went 2-1 up.
Although Giuseppe Rossi had the first chance of the game, Getafe took a third minuet lead through pedro Leon.
It was a beautiful volley from the former Valladolid man, who met a poor clearance from Marcano after Jaime Gavilan's cross to leave Diego Lopez with no chance.
Diego Godin was caught napping shortly after as Roberto Soldado spurned a great chance shortly afterwards, but next blood was drawn by the Yellow Subarmine.
Eighteen minutes in, Joan Capdevila floated a fine effort into the top corner past the flailing Oscar Ustari, who may feel in retrospect that he could have been better positioned.
The closing stages of the first half saw neither side impress particularly much, at least until right before the interval when Giuseppe Rossi passed up a one-on-one opportunity.
Villarreal's luckless evening continued as Cani saw a straight red for denying Javier Casquero a clear goalscoring opportunity, albeit without much knowledgee: the midfielder's leg trailed behind him, and it seemed accidental.
Nonetheless Ramirez Dominguez knew that the rule must be enfoced; off Cani went, and up stepped Soldado to decisively slam home the penalty.
Curiously, Villarreal then went on to utterly dominate, despite being a man on. Getafe made two changes but could not raise their level of play above the sluggish, and duly paid the price.
Santi Cazorla, only one minute on the pitch for Robert Pires, controlled a self-lifted high ball before rifling home a stupendous volley that Ustari did not even dive for.
In the closing stages Villarreal felt a third was possible, and indeed it was: three minutes before full time, Diego Godin finished a great team move by squaring the ball across goalmouth for the unmarked Capdevila to rifle into the net.
Angel Lopez was sent off for a second booking quite at the death, giving Villarreal yet more injury and suspension woes ahead of next week's trip to Atletico Madrid, but the fans were far more focused on the unlikely win.
It was a victory most welcome for Ernesto Valverde's men, but they remain three points behind Michel's side, who will wonder quite how they let a game that was theirs for the taking slip away.
