Racing Santander Coach Portugal Bemoans Disallowed Goal Against Real Madrid
His first game in charge could have been much sweeter, but for the linesman...
After seeing his side lose 1-0 to Real Madrid, Miguel Angel Portugal was left wondering what might have been had the referee not incorrectly ruled out Sergio Canales' goal.
Speaking to Marca after the match, Portugal said, "We were in the game until the end."
"Other teams have come here and played in a more ambitious manner, and been thrashed. The disallowed goal was legal.
"But referees make mistakes, like players and coaches. On this occasion, it has cost us.
"Although it does not mean that we would have got a point, because there was still some time left."
Having just taken charge, Portugal then gave his first impressions of his side, continuing, "The game gave me a good indication of the players."
"We were spineless at the start. Later we improved.
"The introduction of Canales liberated Luis Garcia. The two of them played well together.
"I have known Canales for a long time and always thought he has a big future, but we must take care of him.
"I hope that this loss will serve us well in the long run."
