Valencia's David Villa Gunning For Raul's Spain Goalscoring Record

Nine more goals will bring El Guaje level with the Madrid legend...

David Villa celbrates the goal against Iraq which put Spain through to the Confederations Cup semi-final
Valencia striker David Villa has admitted that Raul's goalscoring record for Spain is firmly in his sights and although he has not set a time frame for achieving the statistic, he says the sooner it happens the better.

Real Madrid veteran Raul scored 44 times in 102 games for La Furia Roja but Villa's goals to games ratio of 35 goals in 54 games puts the legendary Blanco well and truly in the shade, something El Guaje thanks his team-mates for.

"I have the utmost respect for Raul. I do not plan a date for that. I go onto the field to do my job, which is helping the team and scoring goals. Having said that the earlier I achieve it the better for Spain," he told AS.

"Spain has several players capable of giving a lethal final pass. I'm very lucky to have so many good people behind me. My job is to move, give options for a pass and be quick into score."

The Valencia hitman also played down the favourites tag attached to his team for next year's World Cup in South Africa.

"We'll see what happens but I think realistically we're in the group of candidates," he declared.
