Antonio De Nigris died suddenly on Sunday evening, with reports suggesting that the Mexican striker had suffered a heart attack.

During his much-travelled career, De Nigris spent a short time with Spanish side Villarreal. Javi Venta has now revealed the shock with which the squad received the tragic news, and offered his support to De Nigris' family.

"It took us by surprise, and Antonio's death really upset us," he told the club's official website.

"Those who knew him were all very sad because it could happen to anyone. His family must be heart-broken, and we send all our support to them from here.

"We had a difficult year when he was here at Villarreal, but those who shared a dressing room with him are very sorry about the death of our team-mate."
