La Liga Stat Attack: Real Madrid & Mallorca Go Five For Five At Home

Goal.com crunches the numbers to bring you the stats in Spain. This week saw Madrid and Mallorca extend their perfect home record…

Albiol, Xabi Alonso, Pepe, Leon, Real Madrid, Getafe (MARCA)

Top 5 Teams With Most Shots (On Target)

Real Madrid - 25 (8)

Real Zaragoza - 21 (6)

Valencia - 20 (6)

Getafe - 17 (7)

Real Mallorca - 17 (6)

Athletic Bilbao also produced 17 shots and six on target against Atletico Madrid. Barcelona only had 16 attempts at goal with seven hitting the mark, one of their lowest this campaign. Villarreal, meanwhile, were the most efficient as they reeled off 11 shots, five of which were on target, and all five ended up in the back of the net.

Top 5 Players With Most Shots (On Target)

Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - 7 (4)

Victor Obinna (Malaga) - 7 (3)

David Silva (Valencia) - 6 (2)

Diego Forlan (Atletico Madrid) - 6 (2)

Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid) - 5 (3)

Like Higuain, Getafe’s Roberto Soldado also had five shots with three on target but he failed to convert any of them. Villarreal hitman, Joseba Llorente was the most clinical with four attempts, two on target and two goals. But Valladolid’s Fabian Canobbio had the worst ratio. He was afforded five shots but none were on target.

Most Saves

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid) - 7

Oscar Ustari (Getafe) - 6

Ricardo (Osasuna) - 6

Gorka Iraizoz (Athletic Bilbao) - 5

Cesar (Valencia) - 5

Other goalkeepers who had five saves to make were Renan (Xerez), Tono (Racing Santander), Gustavo Munua (Malaga) and Sergio Asenjo (Atletico Madrid), all of whom were on the losing side.

Espanyol’s Carlos Kameni had to produce a staggering eight match-winning saves last week but didn’t have a single stop to make in this round, although he did concede an injury time goal to Valladolid’s Haris Medunjanin, which was incidentally the Pucela’s only shot on target in the entire game.

Real Madrid 2-0 Getafe

- After nine matchdays, Iker Casillas has kept six clean sheets, more than any other goalkeeper in the league. The victory also allowed Madrid to extend their 100% record at home with five wins out of five.
- Raul Albiol’s 28th minute dismissal is the first red card Los Blancos have received in the league this season.
- El Geta have now lost all subsequent away games since the 4-0 win at Racing Santander on Matchday One. And along with Tenerife, they are the only two teams in the league yet to draw this season.
- This is only the third time Getafe have failed to score against Madrid in 11 top flight meetings.

Osasuna 1-1 Barcelona

- Osasuna were the last team to beat Barcelona in La Liga when they won 1-0 at the Camp Nou in the final game of last season.
- The Navarrans can now join Almeria as the only two teams so far to prevent Zlatan Ibrahimovic from scoring when he is on the pitch.
- This was Barca’s second consecutive away draw in the league. They do remain, however, the only undefeated side in La Liga.
- Gerard Pique’s injury time own goal gifted Osasuna a point. It was the centre-back’s first ever own goal in his professional career.
- The Blaugrana now have three players in the top five of the leading goalscorer’s charts: Ibrahimovic with seven goals, Lionel Messi (six) and Seydou Keita (six).

 Xerex 0-2 Sevilla

- For the first time since the opening five rounds of the season, Xerez have now failed to score in back-to-back games.
- Sevilla’s 2-0 victory put an end to their run of two league games without a goal or a victory.
- The clean sheet now leaves the Nervionenses with the joint best defensive record along with Barcelona. Both teams have conceded only five goals.
- Luis Fabiano netted Sevilla’s second goal. It was his first La Liga strike since September 12, bringing his tally for the campaign to three. It is the exact same number of goals the entire Xerez team have managed thus far this term.

Athletic Bilbao 1-0 Atletico Madrid

- This was Athletic’s fourth win of the season and all four have been by a one-goal margin. And of the four, three have ended 1-0.
- The victory also put a halt to a run of five consecutive league games without a win.
- Atletico have yet to keep a single clean sheet after nine rounds in La Liga. Having already lost four times, the 1-0 reverse at San Mames is, however, their narrowest defeat this term.
- Los Colchoneros have also yet to win away from home. This was their second successive match on the road without scoring.

Villarreal 5-0 Tenerife

- This is the joint biggest win of the season along with Barcelona’s 6-1 win over Real Zaragoza and Real Madrid’s 5-0 triumph over Xerez.
- It was also Villarreal’s biggest victory since beating Athletic Bilbao 4-1 exactly one year ago. The last time El Submarino managed to score more than four goals in a single league game was back in February 2004 when they beat Racing 6-3.
- Tenerife have the worst away record at present. They are the only team yet to pick up a point on their travels having lost all five and conceding 15 goals in the process.

 Real Mallorca 1-0 Racing Santander

- Mallorca join Real Madrid with a perfect five wins from five home games. Barcelona also have a 100% record at home, although they have played only four.
- The Balearic Islanders have conceded only once in their own backyard.
- All five of Mallorca’s victories so far have been at home, but this is the first time they’ve won by only a one-goal margin.
- Racing are on a six-game winless sequence, but this is only the second match this term where they have failed to score. Valencia are the only other side to have kept a clean sheet against them.

Espanyol 1-1 Real Valladolid

- Despite being denied a win after conceding the equaliser four minutes into injury time, Espanyol are still on an impressive seven-game unbeaten streak. They have, however, managed only one win in their last five league outings.
- This was only the third goal the Blanc-i-Blau have conceded in six games.
- Stretching back to last season, Valladolid have won just two of their last 20 league matches.

Real Zaragoza 2-1 Almeria

- This game produced ten yellow cards in total - five for each side - more than any other match in this round.
- Zaragoza remain the only team to have scored in every league game so far this season.
- Almeria, meanwhile, have yet to score more than two goals in a single game this term.

Malaga 0-1 Valencia

- Malaga have now gone eight league games without a win.
- Despite losing seven times so far this term, amazingly enough, only once have Los Boquerones lost by more than a one-goal margin (2-0 to Barcelona).
- Valencia now have the best away record in the league. After five games, they have won four and lost just once.
- Los Che are on a five-game unbeaten run in La Liga. They have now also gone four games on the trot without conceding a goal.

Deportivo La Coruna 1-1 Sporting Gijon

- This was Depor’s first draw of the season and having lost 4-0 to Valladolid last week, it’s also the first time this term that they have gone back-to-back La Liga games without a win.
- The Galicians have not been able to score more than a goal a game in their last five league encounters.
- Sporting have not lost in their last four games. It is their best unbeaten sequence since winning four in a row between October 5 and November 2, 2008.
