Quique Sanchez Flores believes that Atletico Madrid have been hugely under-performing, stating that they can be among the best in Europe.

The former Getafe and Valencia boss has returned to Spanish football after spell in Portugal with Benfica and is confident that he can turn around the fortunes of Los Colchoneros.

Abel Resino was sacked last week after Atleti slumped to defeat against Chelsea, leaving them with a record of just one win in their first ten matches in all competitions.

"We’re here to connect with the players and the goal right now is to re-launch the team, which has enough elements to be amongst the best in Spain and Europe," he stated at his presentation.

"The objective is to connect with the fans, because the supporters have the right to be happy, and to connect with the team.

"I give thanks to Atletico de Madrid for displaying confidence in me and I’ll admit that I’m really looking forward to coaching this team. I feel proud to belong to this organisation.

"There’s a lot of work to be done, such as to raise the spirits of the players, who are very good. Being at this team implies a high degree of demand and we’re going to try and be demanding with the players and make the supporters happy."

Since learning that he would be Atleti's new boss, Sanchez Flores has been doing his homework. He took his first training session on Sunday after the team drew against nine-man Mallorca on Saturday.

“I’ve been observing the team up until now. I’ve noticed that the players are very receptive, so they can make progress," the new trainer continued.

"There’s no time for speeches, but plenty of time to work on the fundamental aspects of the team, which are the physical, tactical and emotional aspects."
