Resino Continues As Atletico Madrid Coach While Club Officials Negotiate With Luciano Spalletti - Report
The Italian enters the frame after Michael Laudrup says 'no'...
Former Roma coach Luciano Spalletti is reportedly in negotiations with Atletico Madrid to replace Abel Resino, who looks to be heading for the exit, with former Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielder Michael Laudrup apparently having turned down an offer from the club.
A miserable run of form for Los Colchoneros has seen them win just once in ten games this season and their midweek mauling at the hands of Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League appears to be the final straw for Resino, with Spalletti emerging as the preferred choice after Laudrup's rejection, according to Marca.
The 50-year-old Italian parted company with Roma earlier this season after a four year spell which saw him win two Coppa Italia crowns and one Supercoppa.
Laudrup was favourite to succeed Resino and previously coached in Madrid with Getafe in 2007-08. Despite day long talks between his agent and Atleti officials Laudrup has told a Danish newspaper that, although he is flattered to be linked with the role, he will not be taking over at the Vicente Calderon.
"I can only say I'm glad my name has been linked to such a great club. But I will not be the coach of Atletico Madrid," he told Politiken.
It is understood that former Valencia boss Quique Sanchez Flores is next on Atletico's list, should they fail to reach an agreement with Spalletti.
