La Liga Preview: Osasuna - Atletico Madrid

The Colchoneros are looking to extend their winning run at a difficult territory...

Panathinaikos-Atletico de Madrid (MARCA)
Kick-Off: Sunday, October 18, 22:00 CET
Reyno de Navarra, Pamplona

Due Position

Osasuna are right where most people would place them before the season started: not in the first half of the table, but still distant from the relegation zone.

Los Rojillos have posted some good results so far, such as a 2-1 win at Valladolid and a 1-0 home success over Sporting Gijon, but every time they have met a bigger side on paper, they have had a hard time.

A 2-0 defeat against Sevilla and a 2-1 loss to Getafe came to prove that Jose Antonio Camacho's side are not able to challenge the top half sides just yet, but they are looking to make use of Atletico's poor moment to get some crucial points and move up in the table.

"I see the team with a lot of hope, really eager and motivated," Camacho said at a press conference. "That is what is important, then the results can be better or worse. With our training rhythm, the opponents will have it very hard."

Steady Recovery

Atletico Madrid finally managed to win a match in the league six weeks into the season, when they registered a 2-1 win over Zaragoza at the Vicente Calderon.

Such long-awaited result came at a perfect time for the Colchoneros as it decreased part of the pressure on the club, but it is just too soon to say they have finally returned to winning ways.

Atletico still sit in an embarrassing 14th place and, to top that, they continue having the worst defence of the league, with 14 goals conceded in just six encounters.

The international break certainly gave coach Abel Resino plenty of time to think about what he must to change his side's fortunes and put an end to their poor moment, which must happen sooner rather later if Atletico want to make something out of this season.

Atletico midfielder Raul Garcia is wary of Osasuna's potential, telling Marca, "We know it will be very hard because the matches there [Reyno de Navarra] are very hard-fought and it is hard to win

"The margin for error starting to end and we have to continue in an ascending line and think about the victory."

TEAM NEWS

Osasuna

Coach Jose Antonio Camacho will not be able to make use of Jokin Esparza, Eduardo Fernandes and Roversio Rodrigues, all of whom are recovering from injuries. Carlos Aranda is still in doubt for the tie, but the coach will only make a decision on whether to use him tomorrow.

Cesar Azpilicueta has been included in the squad for the match after missing the last four matches because of being away on international duty.

Probable Starting XI (4-4-2): Ricardo; Monreal, Josetxo, Miguel Flano, Azpilicueta; Camunas, Nekounam, Punal, Juanfran, Aranda, Pandiani.

Atletico Madrid

Roberto Jimenez and Mariano Pernía have both been ruled out of the match because of injury. Ignacio Camacho and Leandro Cabrera have not been included in the coach's plans for the match. Raul García, Sergio Asenjo and Domínguez have all returned to Resino's squad plans.

Diego Forlan will not travel to Pamplona with the squad after arriving in Spain from international duty later than expected. He did not train with the team and Resino has decided against using him in the match so that the striker can rest for the Champions League encounter with Chelsea.

Probable Starting XI (4-4-2): Asenjo; Perea, Ujfalusi, Pablo, Juanito; Santana, Assuncao, Jurado, Simao; Aguero, Pongolle.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Osasuna
- Walter Pandiani

The Uruguay international is Osasuna's top scorer in the league with three goals, and he will be the main threat to Asenjo's goal.

Atletico Madrid - Simao Sabrosa

The diminutive winger was high on form for his national team in their last two matches, and he is now expected to shine for the club and guide them to their second win in the league.

PREDICTION

Atletico Madrid's attacking power may be too much for Osasuna to handle, but their sloppy defence will most likely suffer at the hands of Los Rojillos.
