Alvaro Arbeloa believes that Real Madrid's attempt to dethrone rivals Barcelona from their position as Spanish champions will be their sternest challenge this season.

The Spain international defender enjoys the prestige of the Champions League and the challenge of the Copa del Rey, but thinks that the Primera Division is the most demanding of all the competitions.

Madrid are hoping to return to winning ways this term after seeing Barca scoop everything last time out, and Arbeloa knows which he thinks will be the hardest trophy to win.

"Real Madrid and Barcelona seem to be favourites to win the league because of the strong squads we have, but we'll have to prove our worth on the pitch," he was quoted as saying by the club's official website.

"You have to perform at the highest level for nine months in the league.

"The Champions League and the Copa del Rey are very special competitions. The Champions League has the best teams in Europe and it gives you the chance to play in other countries and to promote Real Madrid throughout the world.

"The fact that the final will take place at the Bernabeu is very special to us, the club and the fans. We'll do our best to win. This is a beautiful competition we are anxious to conquer.

"In order to be successful we must take things step by step. We are very excited about the season. We are aware of the opportunity we've been given and of the responsibility we have."
