Mexico Made A Mistake Hiring Sven Goran Eriksson - Barcelona's Rafa Marquez
The Swedish coach was unable to adapt quickly enough for such an important task...
Mexico should never have appointed Sven Goran Eriksson as national team coach because he did not understand or know enough about the country, according to captain Rafael Marquez.
The Barcelona defender was worried that the team would not make it to the World Cup finals, before the Swede left the post and was replaced by Javier Aguirre.
Eriksson took over the role in July 2008 and won only four out of nine games before Aguirre was installed, and Marquez said he was relieved that there was a change at the helm.
"A bad decision was made," Marquez told reporters.
Aguirre lost his opening game too before guiding the team to four consecutive victories that have put the bid for a place in South Africa back on the rails.
"We all doubted [we would qualify] but Javier's arrival has changed the direction of everything, we trust in his work and we must try to carry it through," Marquez added.
Mexico are second in their group on 15 points, one behind the United States, and they entertain El Salvador on Saturday, before going to away to Trinidad & Tobago in midweek.
