Deportivo de La Coruna have been thwarted in their bid to make Giovani Dos Santos their emergency signing this month because no foreign players can be signed by Spanish clubs outside of the transfer window.

The Galician outfit were hoping to persuade Tottenham Hotspur to sell or lend them their Mexican prodigy, but they will now have to look elsewhere for a new player.

Angel Lafita's controversial last day switch to Real Zaragoza saw the Spanish Football League (LFP) give Depor special permission to sign a replacement.

While the club are still fuming over the departure of their midfielder, the search for a replacement has begun in earnest and will now focus elsewhere.

"It is impossible to bring Giovani to Galicia," Deportivo sporting director Ricardo Moar was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"We like him very much but the Spanish Football Federation has clarified we cannot bring a foreign player in. They will have to be [based in Spain]."

Tottenham remained quiet after Depor coach Miguel Angel Lotina stated publicly he wanted Dos Santos, but Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has voiced his desire to keep the player on previous occasions.
