Real Madrid's fans were unforgiving towards Gago, who stepped in to replace Xabi Alonso...Fernando Gago has sought to defend himself after being jeered by Real Madrid's supporters on Sunday, during the five-goal victory against Xerez in the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Argentine feels that the criticism he received from the crowd was unfair, and he explained that it only highlighted how tough playing for Los Merengues is.
Having picked up a knock that disrupted his pre-season programme, Gago does not yet feel he is fully fit and believes that he needs to be given time to rediscover his best form.
“Real Madrid are very demanding and the fans have a right to express how they feel," he was quoted as saying by the club's official website.
"My job is to play and improve. I am coming off an injury that complicated everything that was worked on in pre-season, but that's no longer important and I want to play.
"I want to continue working and improving.”
