Joaquin Caparros Looking Forward To 100th Game As Athletic Bilbao Coach
The coach is happy with how things are going with his "ambitious" Basque side...
Athletic Bilbao host Austria Vienna in their opening game in Group L of the inaugural Europa League on Thursday evening, and the match will also be the 100th official game that Joaquin Caparros has presided over from los Leones' bench.
While the match is drawing closer, Caparros is keeping the bigger picture in mind.
"Without getting ahead of ourselves, we are in the group phase of the Europa League and have six points in the league. A better start in terms of results [is] impossible," the former Sevilla tactician declared to AS.
"Here we have a group of guys who are training really hard - they will go out and do well or badly, but no one can doubt their commitment. I have come from other teams that don't have as much as this group do.
"Athletic are ambitious. I tell the players that criticism is part of the game - respond in the right way.
"Two consecutive clean sheets and an inspired Gorka Iraizoz. Are things going well in defence?" the coach retorted.
"[Iker] Muniain and [Oscar] De Marcos give us options, playing on the wing and up front. We need everyone, but I will not play them for the sake of playing," he concluded.
