Victor Valdes has revealed the torment that he suffered at the hands of the media before putting pen-to-paper on a contract extension with Barcelona.
The Catalan goalkeeper was linked with a move away from the Blaugrana as he only had a year left on his contract, and he was accused of only being interested in money.
Those accusations among many others hurt him and he has now revealed why it took until this summer for a new deal to be signed.
"We have known about this for two years. For a time things stopped because both sides recognised that we had to make the sporting side a priority," he told Sport.
"A distorted, unreal and false impression of me came out.
"I have always stayed away from it all and never entered into the discussions, neither answering or contradicting what was being said. I thought that was best for everyone.
"I kept quiet which I thought was the best thing to do, although what the press said hurt me a lot and that affected negotiations.
"They wrote many lies that affected my image and I did not like that at all.
"As a professional I think that nobody can say anything about me. I am a hard-working person that loves this club and staying here is all I ever wanted.
"That is why the things that some people said hurt me and it is painful when people write things that are so clearly false."
