Report: Atletico Madrid Launch Enquiry For Valencia Defender Carlos Marchena

Los Colchoneros have identified the Che’s captain as a possible transfer target.

After rumours emerged several days ago that Panathinaikos are looking to make a swoop for Valencia stalwart Carlos Marchena, Atletico Madrid have now reportedly joined the chase for the no-nonsense defender.

According to Valencia-based newspaper Superdeporte, Los Colchoneros have made an enquiry about the 29-year-old, whose agent is expected to meet Che president Manuel Llorente today to find out if the club wants to sell the player.

Marchena’s contract was not renewed last year when his two fellow Euro 2008 heroes, David Silva and David Villa were granted extensions, and he is now eager to seek clarification on his future.

Atletico, meanwhile, have reportedly been busy trying to sign a reliable centre-back to strengthen their much maligned rearguard. They have recently recruited Real Betis veteran Juanito, and they are now also tracking Malaga’s Weligton.

Valencia only just sold their other key defender, Raul Albiol, to Real Madrid last week.
