Sporting Lisbon Confirm Agreement To Sign Matias Fernandez
The young Chilean is set to move to Portugal this summer...
Sporting Lisbon have confirmed that they have reached an agreement "in principle" for a "complete transfer" of Matias Fernandez from Villarreal.
In a statement sent to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission, Sporting reported that "the final agreement is pending medical exams".
The message did not reveal how much the deal is worth and nor did it say how long the Chilean will join Sporting for.
Nevertheless, it has been reported recently that Fernandez would cost around €5 million, and that it would be a three or four year contract.
The 23-year-old joined Villarreal back in 2006 but struggled to hold down a place in the starting eleven and scored just seven times during his spell at El Madrigal.
It is thought that coach Paulo Bento is particularly keen to strengthen in the attacking department and Fernandez appears to fit the bill.
The Chilean is able to play both as an attacking midfielder and second striker, and will get a chance to play in the Champions League next season.
The Portuguese club are in the qualifying rounds for the tournament and will soon find out who their opponents are.
