Atletico Madrid Facing More Transfer Woes As Maxi Rodriguez Refuses To Leave
Los Colchoneros will have their work cut out for them in a bid to rebuild their squad…
Atletico Madrid’s refusal to entertain any unsatisfactory offers for Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan has left the club with a massive headache in their transfer bank accounts.
According to AS, coach Abel Resino returned from his holidays to begin reconstructing his squad only to be told by sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch that there no funds for incoming transfers. This situation stands because the club have so far failed to off-load their unwanted players to free up some cash.
With ‘El Kun’ and Forlan unlikely to bring in any money, Atleti were hoping that they would be able to make a sizeable profit by selling winger Maxi Rodriguez. But the Madrid-based sports daily has reported that the team captain has refused to leave, despite interest from several Serie A clubs, as well as Tottenham Hotspur. It is suggested that he wants to remain at the Vicente Calderon until his contract expires next year, by which time he will be able to leave for free as Los Colchoneros are not keen on extending his current term.
Maxi has a buy-out clause of €24 million, however, Atletico are reportedly willing to accept offers of just €12 million. The club are also hoping that by selling off Jose Antonio Reyes and Jurado, they will finally be able to afford a creative attacking midfielder.
Another reason for the Manzanares outfit to discard Maxi is supposedly because of his poor relationship with Resino - the two had a falling out towards the tail end of last season.
Atleti do not want a repeat episode of what happened with Maniche and Giourkas Seitaridis, two outcasts who threatened to disrupt the harmony in the dressing room with their indiscipline.
