Spain Can Make History - Carles Puyol

Spain can make history if they beat Iraq. Carles Puyol believes the potential to be so good has always been there...
Carles Puyol is confident that Spain can go on and make history as they face Iraq on Wednesday looking to equal France's and Italy's 14-match winning streak.

The Barcelona defender hopes that la Furia Roja can rewrite the record books but wants to win to ensure his team of a place in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup first.

Spain eased to victory in their opening encounter in South Africa by putting five past New Zealand and now they are one game away from chalking up an enviable milestone.

"It's always important to set up new records and re-write history," he told reporters.

"It's a big compliment to everyone and we are happy to do so, but we just have to stay focused and not worry about the record itself, just about beating Iraq," he said.

Spain's success at the European Championships last year and subsequent good form in the World Cup qualifiers is no a surprise because the players' talent means they should be doing this well, Puyol continued.

"The talent has always been there, the difference is that the confidence that we have right now with the winning streak is tremendous, maybe because of our win at the European Championships in 2008," he added.

"We need to take advantage of this momentum to keep on notching up more wins.”

Spain are likely to meet either Italy or Brazil in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup and Puyol thinks that the teams looked good in their opening encounters.

"We watched both the Italy and the Brazil game and they are two strong teams, you cannot separate one from the other," he continued.

"We are in the running just as much as the other two teams.

"The important thing for us is that Spain qualify for the semi-finals. That is the only thing that we are concentrating on. From then on, whoever comes will come and we will deal with them then."
