Jose Maria Nogues Confirms He Will Step Down As Real Betis Coach
The coach could remain at the club in another role next season...
The Seville side could only manage a draw on the final day of the season and that was not enough to prevent them from being relegated.
As was reported yesterday, Nogues confirmed at a press conference today that he will be stepping down and that he will take some time to decide his future.
"I have accepted that I will not continue because I had failed to obtain our safety, I did not achieve the objective. The situation of the club and the environment calls for a new start, and I accept that. It is not because I am not qualified, but in the world of football coaches have spells, I understand this well. I believe Betis needs changes, and one of them is the coach. It has been bad for me because it was the opportunity of a lifetime, I had the chance to show I could work in La Primera," the official Betis website quote him as saying.
"Right now I have to look at this tough blow and then I will make my decision because my challenge is to continue working and, with Betis, I have tried very hard to do that.
"The fact that I am thinking about continuing here his first out of recognition to the club and [Manuel Ruiz de] Lopera, to help the team return to La Primera, and also because of my pride, that is wounded right now."
Nogues did not leave out an apology in his message today, saying he is sorry for the fans, and stating their relegation was "unjust".
"The fans give you goosebumps, they never fail to do so, and they do not deserve what is happening to them," he finished.
