Abel Resino Assures That Atletico Madrid Not Obliged To Keep Him

The Atleti trainer has told the club that he will not pressure them into keeping him at the helm.

Abel Resino’s long-term Atletico Madrid coaching career is still in doubt despite helping the team achieve one of their key targets for the season.

Many expected the former Rojiblanco shot-stopper to be handed a permanent deal immediately after he led the team back to Champions League as the secured fourth placed in the Primera Division last Saturday.

However, the club board has yet to offer him a new agreement, Resino has assured his employers that they are not under any pressure to guarantee him the Vicente Calderon hot-seat.

“I just want everyone concerned to be happy and for the club to choose the best option,” he said in an interview with Telemadrid.

He went on to add that he would release Atletico “from any prior verbal commitment” to extend his stay if he were successful in ensuring the club qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Resino took over from Javier Aguirre at the start of February after the side kicked-off the first seven competitive games of 2009 without a single win and looked in danger of missing out on Europe’s glamour club tournament.

But a convincing 3-0 win over Almeria in the final round of the season made sure Los Colchoneros secured fourth place in the ladder.
