Guardiola Offers Paolo Maldini Role At Barcelona

The Milan legend may have been a one club man on the pitch, but he is being tempted to move to a new one now he is set to retire...

Paolo Maldini - AC Milan
Pep Guardiola is hoping to persuade Paolo Maldini to join him at Barcelona after he finishes playing with AC Milan this summer to add his experience to the European champions staff.

The 40-year-old Italian is set to retire from the game after 24 seasons this year and has stated in the past that he does not want to become a coach afterwards.

But the Barcelona boss wants his expertise and experience to be passed on to his players at Camp Nou and has held talks with Maldini about joining him in the Catalan capital, Channel 4 claim.

“He is the greatest European player over the past 20 years," Guardiola told reporters.

Taking a break from Serie A maybe just the tonic that Maldini needs and to spend a year, at least, learning what life is like on the bench alongside a former player that is still learning.

Demetrio Albertini is reported to have given the former Milan captain rave reviews about Barcelona as he enjoyed his brief stay at the club in 2005 and that could also help Guardiola's case.

The Barcelona coach is looking to give his playing and coaching staff an overhaul in the summer to avoid the same complacency setting in that happened after the club won the Champions League three seasons ago.
