thumbnail Hello,

The giant hitman believes that his side will only grow stronger next term with a few reinforcements…

Sevilla have had a mixed campaign as they secured third spot in the Primera Division to gain automatic entry to the Champions League but faltered tamely in the two cup competitions.

Striker Frederic Kanoute is one of those who believe that the club have done amazingly well, despite ending the season without any trophies.

“I have heard people say that this campaign has been a failure when, in fact, it has been one of the best seasons in the club’s history because we managed to finish in third place,” he said in an interview with EFE.

“Of course, not to be in the final of the Copa del Rey was a disappointment because we were so close. However, being eliminated from so early from the UEFA Cup was a blessing in disguise because it helped clear our fixture list as it was not possible to play in every competition.”

The focus then shifted to the 2009-10 season and Kanoute expects the Rojiblancos to strengthen the squad and challenge for La Liga supremacy.

“A few adjustments are always necessary. When we begin the next season, we will be aiming to be right up there at the top,” he assured.

“It will be difficult to compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona over the next few years, but we must aim big in La Liga and do everything we can in the Champions League.”

Finally, the Malian marksman congratulated coach Manolo Jimenez on his contract extension, while he wished Sevilla's bitter city rivals all the best in their survival dogfight.

He said, “The team must always come first and the coach is part of the team and as such, we must support him while he is here.

“I also want to wish Real Betis the best of luck because it would be nice to continue to have the city derby.”

Sevilla will take on already-relegated Numancia on Sunday in the final round of the season.
