Onieva Entrance Forces Real Madrid Election
Florentino Perez will face competition at the polling stations on June 14 after the his first opponent officially entered the race for the Bernabeu presidency...
The vote will be held on June 14, but until this week Perez had been the only candidate to officially announce his intention to stand, and is earmarked as the favourite.
But Onieva has drawn up ambitious plans of his own and wants to end the era that his opponent began nine years ago by sweeping clean and implementing fresh ideas at the Bernabeu.
"I am standing because of the current crisis Real Madrid is suffering, which is rooted in the abandonment of the basic principles that have determined the Club's fate since the day it was founded, the official club website quoted him as saying.
"The current problems have been exacerbated mercantilism, abandonment of the youth system, and building a competitive team based on capital.
"It is essential to recover the values that made this institution great in the first place."
While being tipped to appoint Real Madrid hero Hugo Sanchez as coach and to buy several big name players, Onieva sought to appeal to the club's fans by promising homegrown talent would be given a chance.
"Three Castilla (Real Madrid's B team) players will be promoted to the first team every year, while 50 percent of the squad should be eligible to play on the Spanish national team.
"Every club team must have its own identity and style. Winning isn't enough. It is important to win with style and good football.
Martinez Bravo, the leader of group Plataforma Blanca, confirmed earlier this week that he will not be running for the presidency.
It was thought that the 39-year-old would be one of the candidates but he has had to pull out due to financial difficulties.
The main stumbling block has been that he has not been able to obtain the guarantee of €57.3 million which is necessary to run.
