Abel Resino Hails 'Greatest Night' After Atletico Madrid Defeat Valencia
The Atletico Madrid boss exclaimed the his side's crucial win over Valencia as one of the greatest nights the club has had...
Atletico Madrid coach Abel Resino lavished praise on his side after they secured a priceless 1-0 win over Valencia to put themselves in pole position to grab fourth spot and Champions League football for next season.
Twenty-eight goal hitman Diego Forlan made the difference, slotting home a first-half penalty kick after Aguero had been controversially felled by goalkeeper Cesar to move Atletico two points clear of both Valencia and Villarreal with just two fixtures remaining.
Resino was delighted with the display of his side on the night, and hailed the atmosphere that the supporters had created throughout the 90 minutes.
He told journalists after the match, "I had many matches as a player on this team, but I think this night may be remembered as one of the greatest.
"We have been far superior in every way. We have won four consecutive matches now, and we must go to [Athletic] Bilbao only with the idea of winning.
"The public has encouraged us a lot. It was one of the greatest nights at the Vicente Calderon."
Atletico Madrid travel to San Mames next weekend to face Athletic Bilbao, before rounding off their campaign with a home fixture against Almeria, and two wins will be enough to see them back into the Champions League qualifying round.
