Yaya Toure celebrates his goal against Athletic Bilbao as Barcelona beat them to lift the Copa Del Rey
Yaya Toure has apologised to Athletic Bilbao fans for making an offensive gesture towards them after scoring in the Copa del Rey final.

The Ivory Coast international crossed one arm across his chest and raised the other above it, in a gesture called corte de mangas in Spanish and most famously used by Giovanni in the Bernabeu.

Today, the midfielder came forward of his own accord to speak to the press, and to apologise to fans of the Basque team.

"I did not want to offend anybody. I have always tried to respect all fans and therefore I want to apologise to the fans of Athletic Bilbao," Marca quote him as saying.

Toure went on to explain that he did it in the "heat of moment" and said that the goal he scored was "the most important" one of his career.

Up next for Toure and Barcelona is the chance to win La Primera this weekend should they take a point from Real Mallorca, and the midfielder says that he wants to "win the league as soon as possible".

"It would be perfect to win it now and then the coach would be able to rest some players with a view towards Rome," he explained.

The Ivory Coast player stated that this is "the year of Barca" and that the team are in "good shape to win three titles".

He also spoke briefly about playing at centre-back rather than in midfield, as he did in the Copa del Rey final.

"I feel comfortable playing in midfield but if the coach asks me to play in defence, or even in goal with a little training, there is no problem. I like the fact my team-mates give me confidence, like [Gerard] Pique and [Carles] Puyol did before the Athletic game. That is important for me," he mused.
