Atletico Madrid Coach Abel Resino Focused On Champions League Push
Diego Forlan's double that downed Real Betis has given his coach a renewed belief that they can qualify for the Champions League...
Atletico Madrid coach Abel Resino was delighted with his side's effort in their 2-0 victory versus Real Betis on Sunday evening, renewing their hopes of pipping Valencia to the Champions League positions.
The prolific Diego Forlan moved onto 25 goals for the season, grabbing a clinical double to defeat a poor Real Betis side and moved Los Colchoneros to within one point of Unai Emery's Valencia side, who were soundly beaten 3-0 by Espanyol.
It could prove to be a vital three points, and with Los Che having to travel to the Vicente Calderon in two weeks' time Resino's side now have their destiny in their own hands with just four matches to play.
In the post-match press conference, Resino admitted that Atletico had not performed to the best of their ability, but at this stage of the season, points are key.
He said, "You could see that without playing a good match, the team gave their all and that is something that has to be appreciated.
"Now we are moving into the last spell of the Championship, and we depend on ourselves for qualification for the Champions League."
Resino had opted to play a 4-5-1 formation in Andalusia, leaving young Sergio Aguero on the bench, but the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper stated that the Argentine had picked up a mild knock in training and was not fully fit.
He added, "He [Aguero] had not played in two days, and we could not run the risk on losing him for the rest of the season."
