Frederic Kanoute Joins Davor Suker As Sevilla’s Top Foreign Goalscorer
The giant Malian striker scored his 90th goal for Los Nervionenses to equal the tally set by the legendary Croatian hit-man.
Frederic Kanoute repaid Sevilla’s decision to grant him a contract extension until 2012 earlier in the week by scoring the all-important winning goal in his side’s 1-0 win at Recreativo Huelva last Saturday.
The victory, Sevilla’s sixth in their last seven Primera Division outings, enabled them to consolidate their chase to secure a third-place finish in the league this season. Kanoute, meanwhile, has now scored in his last five games in succession totalling eight goals, bringing his tally for the term to 20 in all competitions. But it was also his 90th goal for the Andaluz outfit in four seasons since he joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2005.
He has now become the club’s joint foreign top scorer, levelled with Davor Suker who spent five campaigns at the Sanchez Pizjuan between 1992 and 1997 before his transfer to Real Madrid.
In addition, the Malian now only trails iconic Sevilla figures, Guillermo Campanal, Juan Arza and Pato Araujo as the club’s all-time top marksmen.
So far, Kanoute has netted 58 goals in La Liga, 13 in the UEFA Cup, nine in the Copa del Rey, six in the Champions League [including qualifiers], three in the Spanish Supercopa and one in the UEFA Super Cup.
